It seems that when everything died down, people forgot that Disney bought Marvel quite some time ago… I actually covered the event and began speculating the future of the current and upcoming Marvel Movies. However, since this was a long time ago, people have forgotten that there were some “deals” made with the Paramount and Sony Pictures about the current movie franchises that they own (Ironman, Captain America, and The Avengers).
Where did that deal go? If you don’t believe me IGN had the story that actually mentioned the following:
Iger also used some interesting language during his interview. Though we aren’t sure how much can be read into this, the Disney exec did say that existing deals regarding films and videogames will “largely stay in place.”
Granted, there are a couple of indications that suggest Disney taking over the franchises, but there weren’t actual words saying that this will be the case. The logical thing was to leave the franchises were they are at the moment and once the contract finalizes with those companies and distributors, move them safely to Disney. Disney said: “I don’t care, I want yoh moneh now! AUM NUM NUM NUM!!” (I could be paraphrasing). Instead, a couple of days ago, a statement was released informing the public that the upcoming Ironman 3 and The Avengers would be distributed by Disney and not Paramount. However, the upcoming Thor and Captain America movie will still be part of Paramount Pictures.
This “deal” worries me, because it feels like Disney just let Paramount and “Old” Marvel build up the characters for these movies so that they could finish them later. However, was this a bad move? Disney is known for making good movies, but the audience they will want these “super hero” movies to appeal are a very young audience. This could mean, that the upcoming movies might get a bit of “child-proofing”. Thus, preventing the angry parents saying that a super-hero movie is too violent for their kid.
What do you think of this debacle? I’ve heard already people complaining at the fact that this was a backstabbing move by Disney and places the hard work that Paramount Pictures has done to distribute and market the current movie franchises and has made them the success they are today. I kind of agree with them. It seems that now Ironman 3 and The Avengers will hang by a thread to either become a movie “safe for kiddies” or an actual action/super-hero movie.
What do you think and predict? Let me know in your comments.
